The Ithaca College General Assembly, a function of the Occupy Ithaca College movement, held their first meeting on Tuesday to discuss how students on campus could stand in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street protesters in New York City.

Inaction is a form of action. You are either there with this movement or you are not there with this movement. The time is now to let yourself hope. We may well lose the battle, but if we win, you do not want to have to ask yourself, “Where was I when they needed me?”

On Thursday, Ithaca College joined an Occupy Wall Street movement with over 92 other colleges. Close to 200 students, as well as some faculty members, participated in a walkout and rally, one of the most well-attended student protests in the college’s history.

I can still take pleasure in one of the few events I’ve made a point of attending every year since I first came here: The Apple Harvest Festival, an annual autumn celebration of everything that is quintessentially Ithacan.

A group of Ithaca protesters in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement met in Dewitt Park on Sunday, where they will continue to meet each week. The meetings are examples of democracy at work.

“We put a lot faith as progressives in leaders, in our elected officials, and in President Obama to get things done, and if there is anything the last two years have taught us, it’s that we cannot put our faith in these leaders. Ithaca College’s massive construction project on the Athletic & Events Center on the west end of campus is finally drawing to a close, culminating in a dedication event in October. But the attitude around campus regarding the way the college is using the facility is understandably mixed.

Will the murder of Troy Davis simply be the hot topic to tweet about for the next two months? If so, we will merely be creating an illusion of social change and equality, which is far more destructive than productive.

September 21 is the International Day of Peace, and from now on, it will also be the day Troy Davis, an innocent man, was executed by the state of Georgia.
