I recall the very first rush night of Fall 2021 when I began my time here at Ithaca College. I walked into Williams 323 (a room I couldn’t find for the life of me) part way through somebody pitching… I think it was an editor from Sawdust. The entire room erupted into laughter, with people cheering and actively engaging with the editors. I had missed the whole spiel on what Buzzsaw Magazine even was, but I knew right then that there was something special.
Months before I stepped into the fateful doors of William 323, I was somebody who wanted to be as involved as possible with the different journalism organizations on campus. Writing has always been a necessary outlet in my life and Buzzsaw is a place that embraces full creative freedom. I knew I wanted to write film reviews whenever I got the chance — which I very much did. However, I also tried my hand at poetry and two satire pieces.
Being an editor for two different sections allowed me to work with so many different people from across majors and schools on campus. After the isolating experience of the pandemic, I went into Buzzsaw wanting to create a more vivid sense of community with other writers. I hope the writers I worked with continue to build that community and encourage others to join. Writing can sometimes feel so lonely as we get in our own heads… but it doesn’t have to be!
I have full faith in Nadia Arain and Gabriel Biennas for continuing the legacy of Ministry of Cool while Chloe Johnston takes on News & Views. As I move to the west coast to pursue a career in film and television, I’ll never stop writing and sharing my love of writing. I cannot wait to see how Buzzsaw continues to grow and evolve from here.
