Surround yourself with smart people. Not just GPA smart, but out-of-the-box smart. The kind of “smart” that is hard to quantify and straddles the line of creativity.
- Make friends that are richer than you. Make friends that come from more modest households. Gain perspective.
- Once you know your passion(s) do everything you can to follow it/them.
- Take a class you don’t think you’ll like. Take a class that you know you will love and in which you want to gain higher proficiency.
- Go out most weekends. Stay in on certain weekends. Have a wild night. Have a tame night.
- Stay current on news. Discuss current events with classmates who hold varying perspectives. Support, reject, or gain understanding on topics with sound logic.
- Do not compare your college experience to those of friends’ at other schools. Can you accurately compare a Kia to a Bentley?
- Your career starts the minute you start your first semester of your freshman year. Everything from this point forward matters and can impact your life.
- Join at least two student organizations on campus. One can be a professional society and the other could be civic-minded. Improve yourself and improve your community.
- Create a safe haven where you can relax, shut away the world, and melt into solitude.
