Buzzsaw Sports Guy: A satirical look at sports
Lansing resident Tom Shields declared his ongoing shock at the existence of the Oklahoma City Thunder last Saturday night at a friend’s dinner party. Chatting with a few fellow sports fans, he expressed his doubts that the city’s metro area could support a major sports team, focusing on how irrelevant the city seems to the rest of the U.S. “How many people could possibly live there?” he asked of the 31st most populous city in the U.S. “I’m pretty sure the last time I heard the city’s name in the news was the Timothy McVeigh bombing, and that was what, mid-‘90s?” Shields went on to say that the Thunder, which moved from Seattle in 2008, will likely fold after the hype of their first few seasons, although the team finished 12th in attendance last season while enjoying far better monetary support than they ever had in Seattle. Shields’ astonishment has now lasted two and a half years since the NBA’s inception of the Thunder.
